The Part of Real Estate Success Nobody Posts About

Deana Watson blog: The Part of Real Estate Success Nobody Posts About

You know the posts. The keys handed over in front of a sold sign. The award on stage. The team photo in matching shirts with a caption about the grind. You've probably posted a few of them yourself.

What you didn't post was the part where you answered a client text at your kid's game. Or the Sunday you spent catching up on paperwork while everybody else went to the lake. Or the moment at 2am when you stared at the ceiling and did the math on how many more years you can keep this up.

That part doesn't get a caption. Most of us just call it the price of success and keep climbing.

I want to talk about that part. I lived it for a long time, and I think it's the most useful thing I can write about right now.

I Did Everything I Was Told

I've been in real estate for about 14 years. I've sold roughly 750 homes. In a previous role, I built a big team, and that team hit the big number without me selling a single home myself. I spoke on stages. I sat on panels. I ran a group coaching program that a lot of agents looked up to.

If you'd seen my highlight reel back then, you would have thought I had it all figured out. On paper, I did exactly what the industry said to do. Grow your production. Build the team. Hit the number. Then set a bigger number.

Here's what the highlight reel didn't show. I was 210 pounds. I was working nonstop. I was home, but I wasn't really there. My husband and my son got whatever was left at the end of the day, and most days there wasn't much left.

And the strangest part? Nobody ever asked me what I wanted my life to look like. Not a coach, not a leader, not a single person on any of those stages. I never asked myself either.

The Story This Industry Tells You

There's a story this industry tells, and it goes like this. If you want to make more, you work more. When you can't squeeze in any more hours, you build a team. When the team gets big, you build a bigger one. Somewhere at the top of all that, you finally get to rest.

You hear it at kickoff events. You see it on the leaderboard. You feel it every time someone else's number gets read out loud and yours doesn't sound big enough.

I'm not against growth. I love growth. I'm still an ambitious person, and I'm guessing you are too. But that story leaves out the cost. It never asks why you're climbing, what you're climbing toward, or what you're willing to trade to get there.

So a lot of good agents keep climbing a mountain they never picked. I call that Secondhand Success. It's when the goal you're wearing yourself out for came from a stage, a sales meeting or a leaderboard, and you never stopped to check if it was yours.

I was very good at hitting goals. I just never asked if they were mine.

Maybe This Sounds Familiar

I've spent more than 5,000 hours coaching agents, and here's the pattern I see over and over.

You look successful on paper. Your production is solid, maybe great. You might have just started leading a team. People ask you how you do it all.

But you work most nights and weekends. You answer texts at dinner. Your income swings between months that feel amazing and months that feel scary. Everything in your business lives in your head and your phone, so you never really switch off. And home gets what's left over.

You tell yourself this is just a season. Once you hit the next number, things will calm down. But the next number comes and nothing calms down. The goalpost just moves.

At night, you worry you can't keep this pace. And you're even more scared of what happens if you slow down.

If that's you, I want you to hear this clearly. You aren't weak, and you aren't ungrateful. You're burning out on the climb, and you've been told that's normal.

Where It Has to Start

When I finally started pulling myself out, the first thing I reached for wasn't a new system or a new lead source. It was the question nobody had asked me. What do I actually want my life to look like?

That's the first step in how I think about all of this now. I call it the CLIMB Method, and the C stands for Clarify your vision. Before you add one more goal, one more commitment, one more anything, you get clear on the life you're building the business for.

It sounds soft. It isn't. It's one of the most practical questions you'll ever answer, because every other decision gets easier once you know the answer. Which clients you take. Which hours you work. Which opportunities get a yes and which ones get a polite no.

I'm still working on this myself. My goal is a 15-hour work week, mostly Tuesday through Thursday. I'm not there every week yet. But I know what I'm aiming at now, and that changes how I spend every hour.

Something to Do This Week

Here's what I want you to try before next Thursday. Take one week and write down where your time actually goes. Every showing, every text thread, every late night at the laptop, every hour you were at home but not really there.

At the end of the week, sit down with one question. If this exact week repeated for the next five years, would I be happy with the life it builds?

You don't have to fix anything yet. Just look at it. Most agents I've worked with are surprised by what they find, and that surprise is usually where real change starts.

What Comes Next

I'm going to be more open here from now on. About the climb, about what it cost me, and about how I think agents can make more money without adding more hours or more overhead. Some of it will push back on things you've heard from people you respect. That's fine. Take what fits your life and leave the rest.

But here's my challenge to you. Stop calling your exhaustion the price of success. It's a signal. You can keep climbing. Just make sure it's your mountain.

If you want a simple place to start, grab my free playbook, The One-Week Time Audit. It walks you through tracking one real week so you can see where your time and energy are going.

You're allowed to want more and still want your life back.
