Who Did You Have to Become to Get Here?

Oct 27, 2026
Deana Watson blog: Who Did You Have to Become to Get Here?

There is a question we ask at our Ascension retreats that gets the room quiet every single time.

Who did you have to become to get the success you have?

Most people answer it fast the first time. They say things like "driven" or "disciplined" or "someone who doesn't quit." Those answers sound good. They are also the answers you would put on a podcast bio. So we ask it again, slower, and we add a second part. Who did you have to become to get here, and who paid the price for that person?

That second part is where the room changes.

The Person Who Built Your Success

If you have hit real numbers in this business, you did not get there by accident. Somewhere along the way you learned how to push through. You learned how to answer the phone at dinner. You learned how to smile at a listing appointment the same week your marriage was in a rough spot. You learned how to carry everyone, your clients, your team, your family, and still show up looking like you had it handled.

That person was useful. I want to be clear about that. The part of you that learned to push and perform and endure got you through some hard years. It paid the bills. It built the business. For a lot of us, it was the only way we knew how to survive in an industry that rewards whoever answers first and rests last.

I know that person well. I built my business while moving our family from duty station to duty station. I built a team at one base and then had to start over at the next one. I learned to work from boxes, from hotel rooms, from the car in a school pickup line. I got very good at being the one who held everything together.

And for a long time, I thought that was who I was.

The Problem Is That It Worked

Here is what nobody tells you about the identity that built your success. It does not retire on its own. It worked, so it keeps running.

It keeps running when you finally have a team that could take the call. It keeps running on vacation. It keeps running when your kids are talking to you and you are nodding while you check your email. It keeps running long after the season that needed it is over.

Most of the burned out agents I talk to are not burned out from the work itself. They are burned out from being a person they had to become five or ten years ago, in a season that no longer exists. They are still answering every call like the business will fall apart if they don't. They are still saying yes to every client like they are one bad month away from going back to a job. They are still proving something to someone who stopped watching a long time ago.

The business grew up. They didn't get permission to.

Who Paid the Price?

This is the part of the question most people want to skip. I get it. It is uncomfortable to look at.

But if you are honest, you can probably name them. Maybe it was your spouse, who stopped asking when you would be home because the answer never changed. Maybe it was your kids, who learned that "in a minute" from you means something closer to an hour. Maybe it was your body, which has been sending you signals for a year that you keep pushing to next quarter. Maybe it was the friend you used to call every week and now only text on birthdays.

Maybe it was you. The part of you that used to enjoy things. The part that used to have hobbies and ideas and energy at 2 PM on a normal Tuesday.

I am not saying this to make you feel guilty. Guilt does not change anything. It just gives you something else to carry. I am saying it because you cannot let go of something you have never looked at directly. And most high performers have never once looked at what their success actually cost.

Some Parts of That Identity Have Expired

When we sit with this in our mastermind, we ask one more question. What part of the identity you built has expired?

Not all of it. Some of it is still good. Your work ethic is not the problem. Your ability to show up under pressure is not the problem. Your drive is not the problem.

The problem is the parts you never chose. The belief that rest is something you earn after the deal closes. The rule that you have to be available every hour of the day or someone else will get the client. The idea that your worth goes up and down with your production numbers. The habit of saying yes to everyone at work and no to everyone at home.

Those were survival rules. You needed some of them once. You do not need all of them now.

When I finally stepped away from a leadership role that looked great on paper, I still cared about the work. What changed was that I finally saw the person running that role was someone I had become to keep up, and I did not want to be her anymore. That decision was scary. It was also the first time in years that I felt like I was leading my own life instead of reacting to it.

What to Do With This

If this hit something in you, here is what I want you to do. Get a notebook. Not your phone. Write these three questions and answer them in your own words.

Who did I have to become to get the success I have?

Who paid the price for that person?

What part of that identity has expired, and what is it costing me to keep it running?

Be specific. Use names, dates, and real moments. If your answer could fit anyone, keep writing until it only fits you.

You do not have to fix anything today. You just have to see it. Awareness is the first step in everything we do in Ascension, and it is the step most people skip because it does not feel productive. But you cannot build the next chapter of your life on top of a foundation you have never looked at.

The person who built your success deserves your respect. They also deserve to rest. Your next level is not going to come from doing more. It is going to come from becoming someone who no longer needs to prove anything to anyone.

You built the business. Now it is time to decide who gets to live in it.
